About the event

On the 10th of August, Florence celebrates the Feast of San Lorenzo, dedicated to the co-patron saint of the city. This traditional event is organized by the Natural Shopping Center of San Lorenzo, with the collaboration of the Central Market operators, street vendors and numerous volunteers.

The celebrations begin in the morning with a procession of the Florentine Republic, starting at 9:45 am from Palagio di Parte Guelfa towards Palazzo Vecchio. By 10:15 am, the procession reaches Piazza Signoria and continues to the Basilica of San Lorenzo. At 11 am, a Holy Mass is celebrated by Cardinal Giuseppe Betori, the Archbishop of Florence. This includes the offering of candles by the city administration and a blessing for the city.

In the evening, starting from 8:30 pm, Piazza San Lorenzo becomes a hub of festivity. A concert is held, and a free dinner is served, featuring dishes like pasta with ragù, yogurt, whipped cream, and watermelon. The Central Market generously offers this food. The square fills with people of all ages, dancing under the church and enjoying the food. The night is also special because of the falling stars, allowing everyone to make a wish.

The event is a tribute to the historical memory of Florence and serves as an opportunity for the community to come together. It emphasizes the beauty that surrounds them daily and celebrates the spirit of Florentine tradition. The evening is not just about food and music; it's a reflection of the city's rich history, its deep-rooted traditions, and the bond that ties its people together.
