Rificolona

The Festa della Rificolona, or the Festival of the Paper Lanterns, is a cherished tradition in Florence, celebrated on September 7th and 8th. The festival has its roots in Christian tradition, marking the birth of the Virgin Mary. The Basilica of Santissima Annunziata in Florence is dedicated to her, making her birthday a significant event in the city. Historically, peasants and farmers from surrounding areas would journey to Florence to partake in the celebrations. While their primary intent was religious, they also seized the opportunity to sell their produce and handmade goods, turning September 8th into a bustling market day at the square of Santissima Annunziata.

To reach the religious services on time, many began their journey before dawn, using lanterns made of thin cloth frames to light their way. This tradition persists today, with participants carrying paper lanterns on sticks through Florence's streets on the eve of September 8th.…
